Nouvelle Aquitaine: Lacanau Ocean
Campsite Rating: 5 Star
The campsite is attractively laid out in 20 acres of lightly wooded pine forest with sandy emplacements set out in and amongst the shade of the pine trees. Less than ½ a mile from an immense beach of fine sand and a similar distance from the town centre, Airotel de l’Ocean has a warm and friendly ambiance. The climate here is superb (more than 2,300 hours of sunshine per year) and the gentle scent of the pine forests wafts on the air – this is the setting for a superb holiday.
The campsite has everything! A bar and restaurant where you can have dinner on the terrace overlooking the pool area. There is a cooked meals service with a selection of dishes to buy, as well as pizza, pasta, salads, sandwiches, pancakes, waffles, ice cream. The campsite has a well stocked supermarket and a bakery.
Back from the beach – take a dip in the magnificent swimming pool. It is heated throughout the season, it has waterslides, children’s paddling area, and in addition there is a large covered pool, lagoons meandering through palm trees, and an extensive sunbathing area.
Throughout July and August, the campsite’s own entertainment team runs children’s clubs, activities for children and adults, and evening entertainment. The Mini Club is for 4 – 7 year olds, the Kid’s Club for 8 – 11 years old and the Teen Club for the 12 – 17 years old. For adults there is aerobics, fitness, pétanque (boules), etc. In the evenings there are theme nights, shows, karaoke and for the night owls, there is a night club and disco in the Havana Pub (soundproof).
The area has extensive pine forests that are criss-crossed with cycle paths. In land there are huge lakes – superb stretches of water edged by pine forests interspersed with sandy beaches, perfect for windsurfing, sailing and swimming away from the Atlantic waves. Nearby, there are equestrian clubs, an 18-hole golf course as well as various water sports (sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, catamaran hire etc).
The city of Bordeaux is ‘a must’ to visit – it is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Other places of interest include the Dune de Pyla (the highest sand dune in Europe), the Bay of Arcachon, renowned for its oysters and with pretty villages all the way around this huge tidal bay. Be sure to visit the vineyards and the chateaux of the Medoc – it’s amazing to see acre after acre of vineyards set out in perfectly aligned rows.
Once visited, our clients come back to this campsite year after year – it’s essential to book early to get the prime dates here.
