Things to do in Roscoff by Richard Cooper
If your ferry sails from Roscoff and you've got the time dont miss out on visiting the pretty port. Directions towards Roscoff soon start sending you straight to ferry terminal which is just outside the town and once you've started queing that's your lot and it's grim coffee until the ferry sails, so head for the town and park up there's lots of parking some of which is actully on the harbour so even if you only have a little time to kill you've got a decent view.
Whenever we sail from Roscoff we aim to get there early because there's a couple of booze warehouses on the road in and whilst not what they were because of the pounds weakness there are still a few bargains and they also sell strings of Roscoff onions which are much sweeter than our own and last for months in a cool dry larder [garage for most of us].
The port is very old with an unsual lighthouse that I think is open to visitors. There are loads of shops lining the narrow streets selling gifts and there are few art galleries one of which does photographic art and well worth a look, it's no more than 100m from the harbour but I can't remember the road so you'll have to search it out. There are a number of restaurants overlooking the harbour so this might be your last chance for moules and frites or a crepe until your next trip.
There's often a market on near the port and and occasionally a flea market but if you've done enough of that for one life time and you've got the time a trip to the Il de Batz might be worth considering the ferry goes from the end of a long bridge in the corner of the harbour [if the tides out look out for the ancient fish traps and if it's in there might be some anglers to watch] and I dont think it cost a great deal but you need to be sure you've got the time before setting off because your ferry home wont wait. I've never been for this very reason, but one day.
If you missed the onions on the way in there's still chance to pick some up before you head for the ferry because if there isn't a market standing some of the gift shops sell them. If none of the above is of interest there are beaches not far from the ferry terminal look for the sign saying Plage. |
